RAR #32: THE BIRD MAN

Making four appearances in WEIRD COMICS #1-4 (1940), the Bird Man may be the first Native American superhero, preceding even the Bronze Terror. The only thing that makes him problematic, apart from the fact that his depiction varies between white and red skin, is that he has no origin as such.

Still, since the first story states that the Bird Man is "a descendent [sic] of an ancient Indian god," he fits my definition of a Real American, since even if he were white, he would still be steeped in Native American culture. His wings seem to be a real part of his body, and he patrols the deserts of the American West. His only weapons are a knife and a bow-and-arrow.

RAR #31: APACHE RED

Apache Red originally appeared as a backup strip in CHEYENNE KID, and when that book died, the character enjoyed a handful of additional episodes in Charlton's BILLY THE KID. Whereas Cheyenne Kid was a child of white parents who was adopted into the red man's lifestyle, Apache Red was the result of a "bride-theft." Red's Irish mother Brigit was abducted after an Indian tribe raided her settlement, but because the Chief treated her with respect and married her properly, she bore him a child. Despite being a fairly rare (for comics) half-breed, Apache Red entirely favors his mother, right down to his signature red hair.

I spot-read assorted adventures and found them pretty dull. The character's most interesting aspect is that his mother didn't get killed to get her out of the way. In the origin-story, in fact, she's the one who teaches him how to use his fists in approved Irish style.
