I've just finished
a write-up of Real American hero, Coyote, who appeared in a couple of venues during the 1980s. The stories were a bit of a mixed bag but it largely succeeded in emulating the charm of Native American folktales. Confusingly, though genetically the character is Native American, the coyote-god who helped create him (don't ask) infused him with the god's conception of what a white man was like. The writer's reasons for this touch were a bit obscure, though I wondered if it might be in part a cover for any time that the character "didn't sound Indian" to the ears of critics.
