RAR #26: HORSE FEATHERS AND PRINCESS DREAMBOAT

I just finished writing an essay on the 1950 story associated with this cover--

--which I for one found amusing. The comic book JOE COLLEGE only lasted two issues-- this one being number two of two. But if one compares it to some of the lousier stories about Real Americans appearing around the same time, this one is actually a pretty good reflection of imperialistic attitudes without a lot of preaching. In short, the young blonde guy is made the subject of eros by Princess Dreamboat, the Indian maiden, and the subject of thanatos by the war-bonnetted brave with the odd name of "Horse Feathers."

I don't intend to start a category for "fake Real Americans," but here's one from the 1966 BATMAN comic strip:

I suspect that weeks of continuity in which the Joker's Indian henchwoman goes around saying things like "how" and "ugh" aren't really eradicated by the excuse that she's just a Brooklyn girl playing a role. Interestingly, the fake Indian girl's name is "Laughing Girl," which may be a roundabout reference to a Pulitizer-winning 1929 novel about Native Americans: Oliver LaFarge's LAUGHING BOY.

MONSTER MASHUPS #25

I should make some mention of one of the few monster-mashes wherein all the fiends were born from one creator's skull, although to my knowledge Clive Barker never crossed over his Cenobites and Nightbreed characters. That convocation of creatures appeared only in an Epic Comics production, JIHAD, which I reviewed here.

In keeping with Clive Barker's wishes, at no time do the Epic authors use the name "Pinhead" for the guy with all the pins in his head.
